What is it with women and pillows?

I have six pillows on my bed in various shapes and sizes. That's not including the pillowtop mattress or the down comforter. (Or the two cats.)

I realize this is excessive, but I can't seem to help myself. I know many other women are the same way. Are pillows some kind of survival strategy hardwired into the female brain? Is it a DNA-level trait -- or some kind of psychological weakness? Am I a compulsive comfort-seeker?

Ooops. I accidentally posted this to this blog instead of my own. But it sort of fits, so I guess I'll leave it.

i'm glad you posted here, patia, because i confess i too have lusted over many beautiful pillows. maybe it's because they feel so good to squeeze and touch! hehe when i was young it was stuffed animals. you should have seen my bed...i think i had one of every type rescued available from the second hand store.

Hm, instead of having the touchy-feely, accessorizing thang going on, my bed pillow neediness is more physics-related. I need 2 relatively flat bed pillows under my head, and one fuller bed pillow to hug. The latter helps support my "upper" right shoulder/upper arm, as opposed to the left one I'm usually lying on. I also like to have a fourth one to rest my "lower" wrist & hand on if I happen to roll over onto my right side. It helps to keep that lower elbow from hyperextending.

Now, when it comes to couch pillows, well, that's when my girly-girl comes out, but that's a whole 'nuther Oprah.

Eh, I want one big, firm pillow with which to sleep. My husband, on the other hand, usually has 2 or 3 under his head, one he has to hug, and one between his feet. Plus a huge pile of blankets that he doesn't so much sleep under as tangle himself in.

Our bed is so uneven it's pretty hilarious.

I agree with c'girl about hugging the pillow, it seems help with my shoulder pain... but other than that I can't really explain that other 3 pillows on the bed. I just think it makes for a more comfy and inviting bed

Definitely a girl thing. You can't have too many. And a teddy bear, hunky man or two and some cats of course!

Vanessa, sounds like you and your hubby have things backwards! (Or I'm stereotyping ...)

F@ery, I would like a combination hunky man/teddy bear. I think I would even give up a few pillows for that. ;-)

My pillows:
Lounge pillow (like a chair)
Body pillow
One king-size down pillow
Two standard pillows
Neckroll -- this is my favorite!!!

Pre-married days, I had four pillows, two cats and a stuffed animal. In the co-habitating days, it was two pillows each plus a dog. Once dog #2 arrived, the cats came back.

And, today, it's still two pillows each but with as many as four cats, and I'm highly considering another pillow from my growing baby belly.

Have you seen the Snoogle? It's a pillow for pregnant ladies. I was tempted myself. You can find it via Google, if you're interested.

Oh my, I love pillows too. I have about 7. It's the goddess in all of us. My hubby hates all the pillows he kicks them off the bed. Somehow, I find out in the middle of the night and stack them all back onto the bed again..hehe

patia- Yes, I own one. My hubby bought it from online when I was pregnant. My God! It saved my back! I love it, and still use it.

Four pillows, one cat. I can never get enough pillows. I thought it was only me! Glad to find out otherwise.

i took up the pillows after having 25 years with a husband and suddenly learning to live alone. having all the pillows made me feel less alone. now i love my pillows, and feel the need to have various sizes depending on the way i am lying. when the boyfriend is around, the pillows get tossed to the floor. but i still get to pick and choose the size/how many i want! lovely post and comments...

This post recently popped back up in my search results ....

I'm glad to hear so many commenters identify with my pillow addiction. It's gotten ridiculous lately, the way I have to have them all around me, just so.

I think Pookiepie has it right: "It's the goddess in all of us."
